Today, we are speaking with Thierry Étienne, Sales Director at TRIONYX, a specialist in safety solutions for lithium battery storage. 1. Regulations and the RT362 standard: what the law says about the storage of lithium batteries

Q: Thierry Étienne, you are familiar with the legislation governing the storage of lithium batteries. What does it currently stipulate?

TE: Article R4412-18 of the Labour Code states that employers must take the necessary measures to prevent the presence in the workplace of ignition sources likely to cause fires or explosions. Lithium batteries are therefore clearly covered by this provision. To meet this requirement, the French Technical Recommendation RT362 was introduced in early 2026.

Q: What does this technical recommendation recommend?

TE: Limit the energy capacity stored in the cabinet. Fit the cabinet with various safety devices such as: a connected alarm, an open-door alert, an automatic circuit breaker, a dry contact to connect to the building’s fire alarm panel, a specialised automatic lithium fire extinguisher, a flame protection system, a ballistic protection system, and a ventilation system to limit the temperature inside the cabinet. This is to control thermal runaway, prevent risks associated with the spread of a lithium fire, and thus protect both property and people.
